Soaps will always be presents in a person’s home. Everyone has always been dependent on soaps when it comes to cleaning, making it a necessity for all of us. Soap making is the process of making the bars of soaps that we use from scratch. This process is called saponification wherein the animal or vegetable fats and oils are mixed with a base to transform it into a salt. These salts of the fatty acids are the soaps that we use for cleaning. Soaps are effective cleansing agents because these trap the dirt and allow it to be washed off by water, together with the soap.

Handmade soaps are the soaps which are made from soap making. These soaps are different from the industrially produced soaps. Since the process is quite different for the two, the products will also have its own set of qualities. Soap making usually involves the use of excess fat, known as superfatting. The purpose of this is to retain the glycerine on the soap enhancing the moisturizing property. Handmade soaps are often more skin-friendly than other kinds of soaps.

There are actually different kinds of soap making processes. These are the cold process, hot process and the melt & pour process. There are certain advantages and disadvantages that these methods have. The cold process is done by slightly melting the mixture to liquefy it and maintain it at that temperature. The hot process of soap making involves heating the soap mixture to a higher temperature. For the melt & pour process, there is a pre-made mixture which is melted and poured into the mold.

Soap making materials are not hard to find. These are readily available anywhere so you can just buy them. Besides from soap making being such an easy activity, it allows the people to be creative. Soap additives can be found anywhere to enhance the quality of soaps. If you want to make colored soaps with a specific fragrance, you absolutely can! You just have to be creative when making your soap mixture. Soap making is actually fun but as with all good things, you need to take precautionary measures. Handling lye is needs to be done very carefully. These can corrode your skin and other materials needed for soap making. Always be aware of the dangers of lye when making soap. You should be careful everytime your add lye to cold water, mixing the mixture and even pouring it. The mere contact on your skin can really be very dangerous so make sure that you wear gloves all the time.
