Is There a Future For Solar Power?

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Sunday 26 July 2009 11:02 am

Introduction

There may be some confusion about the term Solar Power because there are a number of systems that have been established for many years using the sun to heat water, heat ovens to cook food or heat your home either directly or indirectly. But what we are really interested in is the idea of producing electricity from the sun. That electricity can then be used for different requirements not just for heating water or rooms. Technically Solar Power is any system which is powered by the sun to produce useable energy.

Making electricity really isn’t that hard so I am told. The technology is now available to convert the sun’s light into electricity using Photovoltaic cells. One company I know has developed large scale photovoltaic plants in Southern Spain, where of course there is plenty of sunshine. Panels made up of photovoltaic cells can be installed on the roof or placed anywhere they will capture the sun. They are then connected to the electrical supply in the home and used to run the everyday appliances we depend on.

What Does Photovoltaic Mean?

Photovoltaic literally means light and electricity and the technology has been developed to convert solar energy into usable power. Basically the sun produces white light, which is just a different kind of energy; as I understand it, photovoltaic cells trap this light and turn the wavelengths into electricity. They do not need bright sunlight to operate so even on cloudy days electricity can be produced due to the reflection of sunlight, and on days of light cloud energy yields are higher than in bright sunshine.

How Photovoltaic Cells Work

To make these cells produce energy you need two layers of semi-conductor material which has been adapted, so that one is positively charged and the other negatively charged. When light shines on the semi-conductor, electrons are released to produce electricity. The greater the concentration of light the more electricity is produced. The electrical field across the junctions between the layers causes electricity to flow as (DC) Direct Current. Photovoltaic cells are then joined together to make panels which are positioned strategically to capture as much sunlight as possible on or around the designated building. Once the photovoltaic cells are joined together they officially become Solar Panels.

Where to Install the Solar Panels

Once you decide to have solar panels then positioning them for optimum light and sunlight is a vital consideration. If you have a good roof space high enough and not shaded by trees, preferably facing south or south west, then you will probably have the ideal location. Because we live a bungalow there is a huge roof facing south on one side. Looking at the design of the roof we concluded we could have several panels facing South East, South and South West thereby capturing sunlight throughout the whole day.

Solar panels can be mounted on frames on a flat roof or the ground or even on the side of buildings. I would think the main criteria are that they are safe and stable so they won’t fall over or blow away in high winds. The solar panel we have installed for hot water is securely mounted on our roof with strong metal fixings.

Solar panels are produced in many shapes and sizes, some are even made as roof tiles, and there is some new technology on the horizon enabling solar panels to be incorporated into actual windows. Smaller portable solar panels can be taken on holiday when you go camping or caravanning.

Modern solar panels are produced in many different shapes and sizes.

Why Would You Want to Install Your Own Solar Power System?

Green Energy - Well firstly there is the issue of ‘going green’ and avoiding using carbon producing energy. There has never been a better time to do your bit to save the planet. Carbon emissions are contributing to the erosion of the glaciers which provide much of the world with drinking water. Global warming is a huge concern and if a large proportion of the world population reduce their carbon footprint then the hope is that global warming will slow to its natural cycle in the evolution of the earth.

Cost - Then there is the cost of electricity today. Utility companies are charging far too much for energy and today I read in the paper that one company is not going to reduce the bills now that the price or raw materials has gone down. They plan to use the profits for re-investment! So in fact we are paying twice for the cost of re-investment.

Prices in the UK have trebled in the last year and even with less sunlight in the UK than many other countries solar power is still worthwhile to reduce the bills. During this financial crisis anything that can be done to minimise costs is of benefit. Once your solar system is up and running any excess electricity you produce can be sold back to the national grid. So instead of bills you get paid by the electrical companies for producing more than you can use.

Freedom - When I am showering using the water from my solar heating system, I have this wonderful sense of it being free hot water. I know it is not really free because we have already paid for its installation. But now it is done, it looks after itself and on sunny days there is masses of hot water. It does not need electricity to make the water flow through the pipes so if there is a power cut we can still get hot water.

My policy over the last few years has been to put in systems that free us from the tyranny of the electricity companies and the oil barons. Without independent systems we have no choices if the powerful companies decide to put up prices or cut us off.

The most persuasive argument for me was when Russia decided to cut off gas supplies to the customers when they had a agreement in place so that the people of those countries had no fuel to keep them warm during the coldest winter months. From my perspective is seemed it was all because ‘the powers that be’ wanted to flex their power muscles and increase prices to line their own pockets. None of us want to be in that position.

DIY Solar Panels and Installation

Now that we have a solar hot water heating system installed we are keen to get started on producing our own electricity. We use a great deal of electricity running 5 computers for our home based business and expenses have gone through the roof this year.

A solar panel kit is the easiest way to build your own solar power unit and there are number of e-books on the market on how to do this.

The marketing material on each website is persuasive and they claim that you can make these solar panels for $200 or £150 which is a great deal cheaper than they can be bought readymade. The books provide an easy step by step guide written in clear straightforward language with the complete novice in mind. People claim they are making these panels over a weekend and are delighted with the results.

So why would you want to make your own solar panels and then install them yourself? Wind and Solar power systems have been on the market for years but the costs are virtually prohibitive. The cost of commercial panels makes nonsense out of the whole idea of recovering the outlay within a few years. Then there is the satisfaction of producing something essential to maintain our way of life with your own hands.(Rather like growing your own vegetables)

As well as making these panels for yourself and when you have become more adept at making them, there is the possibility of a lucrative business producing and installing solar systems starting with your friends and neighbours. Once they start telling their friends about the savings they are making you will find you have more orders than you can handle.

Future for our Children and Grandchildren

The ways we have used and misused our natural resources are creating a legacy for our children and grandchildren which will be, to say the least, challenging. The fossil fuels will run out in the next century and as resources become scarce and population increases there will be extreme competition for what is left. I don’t think the world is going to be an easy place to live in and our descendents will have to adapt to a life that could in many ways, be similar to the Middle Ages in Britain or the early settler days in the US.

I won’t dwell on the possibilities of what could be, but I do think anything we can do to help establish a system using renewable energy will be the best legacy we can bestow on future generations.

A wonderful example of natural resources running out is on Easter Island. From study and research of this uninhabited island it would seem there was once an abundance of trees. In fact it was completely covered in forest. The inhabitants cut down these trees as a source of fuel but also for carving images which you can still see on the island. However when the trees became scarce, instead of planting and nurturing their valuable resource, they continued to cut down the trees until there were none left. Because there was no more wood they had used up their means of survival so they all died out or possibly left. To this day it is an uninhabited island with no trees. (In New Zealand there is an oral history of the Maori people canoeing from the pacific islands to find their new land of the long white cloud. They could well have been the ones from Easter Island)

Storing Electricity or Selling Back to the Grid.

Just having solar panels is not sufficient to provide you with electricity for your requirements. Once electricity is produced there has to be a method to convey the correct power to the appliances. For the most basic system after the solar panel, you will need a charge controller which regulates the flow of electricity to the battery. A battery is an essential item to maintain the supply when it is dark and an inverter which is essential to convert the direct current (DC) generated by the solar panel to alternating current (AC) for use with all appliances. However by DIY the system could pay for itself within a couple of months.

Once your solar power system is up and running you could choose to just provide electricity for your own use and store any excess in deep cycle batteries. You may however prefer to sell the excess back to the national grid to offset any usage you might need over and above the production of the solar panels installed.

A solar power system will work best if it is combined with deep cycle batteries to store any excess electricity for later use.

Apparently there are ways of getting deep storage batteries for free in which to store electricity that you have produced, over and above your current consumption. A charge controller is advisable to monitor and control the charging of the battery and prevent it being overcharged. Careful use of the battery will extend its life and save having to swap it so often.

Selling electricity back to the national grid will require installation of several more items than the basic system uses and is a little more complicated to install. But if it offsets the cost of the electricity you do need, it might be a better system eventually.

Will it work in the UK?

Although sunlight hours are fewer in the UK than in other more sunny climates photovoltaic cells work with light, and as mentioned earlier, they work particularly well on partially cloudy days of which there are many. We already have several solar units in the garden and I have never known them to not have enough light to work, even in winter.

Will we run out of Raw Materials?

The semi-conductor material used in the construction of the solar cells is mostly silicon. Silicon is basically derived from sand and sand is the second most copious material in the Earth’s mass. So I think it is unlikely we shall run out of raw materials.

Conclusion

Hot water powered by the sun has been in use for many years in countries where there is a plentiful supply of sun and is known as passive energy. However the development of new technology whereby light can be converted to electricity is a major step in the evolution of civilisation.

What I don’t understand is why Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain don’t make more use of this technology as it is sunny there most of the time and the land is mainly sand. Now that oil supplies are dwindling maybe they will turn their attention to other forms of electricity production and use their vast wealth to invest further in the solar and wind technology. I did read that there are plans to turn parts of the Sahara into solar power farms, and that the plan is to export a fair amount of the power produced, into Europe. This could be an excellent export opportunity for Africa.

To be completely free of electricity from the grid would be a huge bonus for me and there seems to be a small revolution going on with a ground swell of public opinion demanding the use of renewable sources to produce energy. People are getting fed up with being hostage to energy companies and are looking for ways to challenge the system.

It is a fact that solar power is one of the safest, easiest and cheapest ways to produce electricity for our homes. In an ever increasingly energy hungry planet, currently only 0.2% of energy comes from renewable sources and 93% comes from sources that will eventually run out. So now is the time to look for an alternative in the form of wind and solar energy to provide a very moral and ethical gift for the generations to come

How Much Money Can You Make Selling Ebooks?

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Sunday 26 July 2009 7:43 am

Anyone who is interested in selling ebooks would like to know how much money they can make out of it. Well, like most business ventures, the answer to this will largely depend on many different factors. For example, the amount of time you put into the promotion of your ebooks will have a direct effect on sales. Also, demand for your ebook topic is another important consideration. People who are good at identifying good ebook topics and promoting their ebooks usually stand a better chance of making a lot of money.

How Much Money Can You Make Exactly?

Some Ebook sellers lose money in the course of a year while some make hundreds of thousands of dollars. More realistically, however, is somewhere in between these two points. Many ebook authors make between $5,000 and $25,000 a year as a rough guide.

How to Maximize Ebook Sales

The best way to ensure high sales is to constantly promote your ebook. This may entail long working hours. Some of the best ways to promote your ebook include buying advertising from large advertising portals such as Google and Yahoo, using link exchanges, press releases, writing articles for websites and ezines, building an information rich website and writing great ebook sales pages.

Accomplishing all of this is no minor feat. You can expect to be in product development for several months and then the promotional stage may take another 4-12 months. It’s not necessarily an easy job but as stated above the payoff could be substantial. Another idea is to write several ebooks and then to sell this as an ebook package. You could also offer your package with resale rights. There are thousands of people looking to resell ebooks and you could profit from this demand.

Worst Case Scenario

Should you decide that that ebook entrepreneurship is not for you, you will still have written an ebook and be selling it online. That makes you an author and you should be proud of the achievement. Furthermore, your ebook may give you some extra cash on a monthly basis. If nothing else, it will be a good learning experience. You have nothing to lose, so why not give it a try?

The Family Kitchen

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Sunday 26 July 2009 7:18 am

Cooking together is so important to a family. In today’s world of rush, convenience foods, eating on foot, or skipping meals completely, we must set a better example of good times, the habit of listening, showing respect, taking turns, and learning about what makes us healthy as a family.

There is no better place to fight stress, set a calm tone for the home, than in the family kitchen. Food has universal power, we all need it. Preparing food together in the kitchen gives everyone a chance to talk, to complete a task, and really get to know each other.

If you’re tired of “How was your day?” and getting the response “Fine” then, I suggest bringing all the kids into the kitchen, assigning parts of the meal to each one, and talk.

Talking to kids, for parents begins with listening. Baking cookies, or learning easy recipes is a great conversation starter. All kids can mix the dough, spoon it onto a cookie sheet, and no one will turn down warm cookies and milk.

Following recipes helps our brain function and stress seems to melt away. The smells of cinnamon, vanilla and other flavors, like chocolate, help you relax and put behind you all the worries for at least an hour or so. Family stories will flow, and you’ll be building family memories in no time.

Mom, focus on the kids, help them see how important they are. One way kids feel needed is to actually invest in the home by helping bake, cook, set the table and clean up. While taking out the trash may bring complaints, warm cookies are a great reward. Ignore mild protests, and keep the kids in the kitchen!

You’ll all have a great time, and you might even become friends! Nothing is better, than family in the kitchen, and cookies in the jar.

Hawaii Vacation Rentals - Finding The Best Deals

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Saturday 25 July 2009 2:00 pm

If you are looking for a cheap Hawaii vacation, consider a Hawaii vacation rental which offer an affordable alternative to Hawaii hotel accommodations. Hawaii vacation home and condo rentals are a fantastic way to experience Hawaii’s beautiful beaches for less than you may normally spend on a hotel of the same quality.

Throughout the year, Hawaii vacation rentals are available. Since such a large number of rentals are available, it’s rarely difficult to book a reservation and unlike many other vacation destinations, you won’t be fighting to find a room. Part of the reason for this is because people who have rarely or never visited Hawaii are often unaware of the rentals that can be found.

Big Island vacation rentals are often considered to be the best in Hawaii. The Big Island is beautiful and you have a lot of different location to choose for your visit if you are new to Hawaii and even if you go there every year. Hawaii is one of the best vacation destinations in the United States and, indeed, the world.

It is some times possible to find an all inclusive rental, where the rental company supplies all your needs. These rentals include: sheets, table linens, cooking and eating utensils, TVs, and many other items that you will need. These rentals will give you a home like environment plus hotel hospitality.

There are different types of rentals that you may be interested in looking into. There are timeshare rentals and there are normal vacation rentals. The normal rentals are the simplest form of rentals. The timeshare rentals are a little more difficult to understand and utilize, but can save money for many people in the long run.

Vacation rentals are like a hotel room where you are merely renting a place in Hawaii for a specific period of time. Timeshares differ in that they are contracted and you’re actually purchasing a place for a guaranteed length of time for a specific period. For instance, you can buy a timeshare in Hawaii for 2 weeks per year for a period of 20 years. In this respect you can save money because you are purchasing a piece of property with other like-minded people and splitting the costs amongst the group.

Your Medical Insurance Is On the Line And an Organization You Have Never Heard of Is Holding the Reigns

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Saturday 25 July 2009 10:24 am

They know who you are, whether you smoke and how fast you drive. If you’re applying for medical insurance, you need to know what the MIB knows.

What does medical insurance have in common with the CIA, Freemasons and the Skull and Bones society? Your eligibility for affordable medical insurance or major medical insurance plans just may be shrouded in the mysterious folds of an organization the general public knows little about. There are no secret handshakes or enigmatic symbols, but it does have a coding system known only by its employees and members.

What is this ominous-sounding organization? It’s the MIB Group, formerly known as the Medical Information Bureau, and it provides information to insurance companies that can make or break a consumer’s medical insurance application. Though the MIB has been in existence since 1902, most consumers have not heard of it.

The MIB is described as a “membership corporation,” and is owned by approximately 470 insurance companies who make up the MIB’s membership. The MIB’s stated mission is to detect and deter fraud that may occur during the course of a person obtaining medical insurance, life insurance, disability income and other types of healthcare insurance. It protects insurance companies from being defrauded by an applicant who knowingly or unknowingly omits critical information or lies.

The MIB is a lot like a credit reporting agency. It provides information to insurance companies to help them decide whether or not to provide medical insurance to an applicant. The information also helps the insurance company determine the patient’s premiums.

Not everyone has a report on file with the MIB. If you have not applied for medical insurance or an individual life insurance policy within the last 7 years, then you do not have an MIB report. According to figures reported by the MIB, the organization collects information on around 15% to 20% of people who have applied for either medical insurance or life insurance policies.

The MIB’s similarity to credit reporting agencies isn’t a superficial one. The U.S. government classifies the MIB as a consumer reporting agency, which means it must comply with both the US Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. That means consumers have the right to a copy of the information reported by the MIB to insurance companies. In fact, you have access to one free MIB report each year.

Some of the information collected and reported by the MIB includes:

  • Medical conditions
  • Medical test results
  • Negative habits such as drugs, alcohol abuse, smoking and overeating
  • Hazardous occupations and/or hobbies
  • Poor driving history

Information collected about the MIB stays in a consumer’s files for seven years. Also, a consumer’s record will indicate which, if any, members have requested their information within the previous 12 months.

Because this information can affect a person’s ability to obtain medical insurance, consumers are encouraged to check with the MIB and to request their report if one exists. That way the consumer can check the report for accuracy and will be aware of any issues which may negatively impact their ability to qualify for medical insurance. Consumers have the ability to dispute any of the information on their report through the MIB’s dispute process.

To request your file, phone the MIB by calling their toll-free number: 866-692-6901. You will be asked to provide certain personal identifying information, and only you can request your file. A consumer’s guide to the MIB is available on the group’s website at mib.com.

A Celebrity Extravaganza is Awaiting You

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Friday 24 July 2009 11:03 am

For the best in a celebrities extravaganza, you must do some searching to find exactly what you are looking for. Perhaps you are looking to emulate one particular star, going for the same look or the same style, even trying to get their personality down as your own. Or maybe you just like their music videos and want to enjoy some great tunes. Some just love the interesting gossip that’s so prolific all over the Internet. Whichever you prefer in celebrity fun, you can find it. Start collecting the music, photos or videos of your favorites. Someday they could be treasured items.

Have you ever hunted for celebrity blog sites on your computer? If you just make use of any popular search engine, you’ll find many choices. The gossip websites, as well as the entertainment shows on television, elicit all sorts of comments and critiques. But you must remember, celebrities are just people - although very talented, of course. They work hard to entertain and give us the ability to escape reality once in a while, with a great movie or some amazing music. Everyone seems to have his or her own opinion of any individual in the news. You just have to make your own decisions based on your own experiences.

Celebrity photos are always something that catches attention. The big controversy is if they are edited somehow, giving our stars more of a glow than really exists. But there are some celebrities that look even more beautiful in real life than in their photos or on their videos. Check out pictures of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. The boys will love to see some Pamela Anderson pictures and some great lady celebrities posing for the camera. When you can’t see them in person, certainly a video or a photo will work!

Of course, the big thing today is celebrity gossip scoops. Most everyone seems to be interested in getting the latest from Hollywood. Scandals are plentiful, and people read the gossip news to find out who loves whom, who is leaving whom, and where they are traveling. They can see the most recent events and the latest photos. The girls moon over actors like Nick Nolte, Hugh Grant and Robert Downey, Jr. The men study the starlets’ pictures and read about what they like most in men. We can get our minds off of all the chaos in the world today, by immersing ourselves in the lives of the rich and famous.

Heartburn Treatment Foods

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Friday 24 July 2009 10:25 am

Foods that cause heartburn is something that everyone who is experiencing this painful condition wants to learn about. The main thing you need to remember is to make sure you keep a journal of everything you eat during the day. The same thing with being overweight, it causes pressure in your stomach and can backup stomach acid also.

I mean sometimes its so bad I feel as if someone stabbed me in the heart with a flaming knife. What worked for me was simple baking soda in water after my heartburn. I’m watching more what I eat and try not to scarf down the food as fast as possible.

Try adding some cardamom to cereals such as cooked oatmeal. It would also be a good idea to put some in your baked goods. Sage is a great spice, because it helps from having stomach acid come back into the esophagus. You can make sage into a tea. This would be a great drink, because it would relieve stomach pain. In order to find out which heartburn treatment will work for you, try an over the counter medication first. First, if a doctor prescribes you antacids or antihistamines for your heartburn, then you need to know that these are very temporary.

Lose weight if you are overweight. Losing weight is the best thing you can do to ensure you won’t experience burning pain. You can relieve a lot of pain and discomfort if you lose even just a little bit of weight. You need to limit your overeating. Make sure you control your food portions.

Picking The Best Fishing Poles

Posted by lmgraff | Posts | Friday 24 July 2009 10:10 am

There are fishing poles, and then there are fishing poles. There is a Rod for every fishing situation, and knowing the difference will certainly pay off in the long run.

While many may argue that the term “pole” refers to a relic of a tool while a “rod” is a more sophisticated piece of fishing equipment, the fact remains that the two terms are generally interchangeable. Whether called a pole or a rod, the tool has been fashioned in the same manner for many years, with the basic materials of graphite, carbon, fiberglass, bamboo or composites proving to be the main improvements. Another is in design, with different poles being used for different purposes. While there are many, the main types of fishing poles are fly fishing poles , spin casting poles and bait casting rods.

Fly fishing poles or rods need to have a lightweight and flexible feel. Bamboo fly fishing rods offer best quality, but generally are an costly choice . Graphite rods are the most highly sought types on today’s market as they are strong, lightweight and yet flexible. Usually between 7 and 9 feet on length, the size of the stream or lake dictates which pole length should be used. The term “rod weigh” actually describes the line size used on the pole, and can range between 1 and 15. This method of fishing is generally for a more experienced level, as it requires a fair deal of effort for the angler. This is because it is the line being cast rather than the lure.

Spin casting is a relatively easy skill to acquire, and is recommended to many beginners primarily for that reason. Shorter than most, the spin cast rod also requires high flexibility. The reel is the tool that needs the most practice, as it is a technique; however, it takes most people just a few minutes to learn. Located on the top of the fishing pole, the spin cast reel is within easy reach and control of the angler. The size of rod and line will vary depending on the type of fish being pursued; bass would need a heavier weight than a panfish would require.

During professional fishing tournaments, bait casting is the common method. Bait casting rods are heavier and longer, and stronger to be able to combat the fighting foe at the end of the line. This type of fishing pole is also very popular with bass fishermen due to the short time it takes to land their bass using the strong and powerful line. The reel also sits on the top of the pole, and is able to handle the heavyweight line needed to bring in “the big one”. Bait casting poles and reels take much more practice to master, and is considered to be more for the experienced angler.

Fishing poles vary widely to meet many needs, as is evident by those on the market today. There is a pole for every situation, and for many fishermen, having several poles means they are ready for any situation.
